An unmissable experience at Deer Duck Bistro

On the corner of Milton Road and Grimes Street, you’ll find Deer Duck Bistro. Although the outside looks rather nondescript don’t worry, a magical food experience waits within.

Upon entering you find yourself in a small bar, with comfy chairs to relax in whilst you wait for your table. When you’re led to your table is when the magic starts to unfold. A winding passage leads you to the dining room. The dining room feels like something out of a Victorian novel; art fills the walls, all the tables and chairs are antique (or at least look antique) and are bathed in soft candlelight. It’s a fantastic atmosphere; enhanced by the friendly service from the staff.

The food though is what makes this a must visit place. Although they do have an a la carte menu Deer Duck Bistro specialises in degustations. We were lucky enough to experience seven courses pulled from two of their new menus. Deer Duck Bistro focuses on sourcing the best quality ingredients and presenting them in a way that really showcases their flavour.  Throughout the evening the chef came to the table to explain where our food had been sourced from, and what the thought process was behind the dish they had created.

Deer Duck Bistro is also keen to embrace as many native ingredients as it can - and nowhere was this more obvious than the thinly sliced kingfish with Davidson plum and pickled Lily Pily. The  delicate kingfish flavour was perfectly paired with the cardamon flavoured plum and the sweet pops of Lily Pily. Other treats included sous vide duck which was served with pumpkin and palm sugar puree and Brussels sprouts in butter. The sweet pumpkin was balanced the bitter flavours of the Brussels sprout and the richness of the duck. Dessert was a cheeky play on the foods you get at the carnival. It featured toffee apple sauce, burnt caramel popcorn brittle, Persian fairy floss and peanut butter ice cream.

Deer Duck Bistro Duck Bistro is not somewhere you would come for a casual night out; the atmosphere (and price) is much more suited for a special occasion; or maybe an occasion you want to make special.

Perfect for when you want your night out to be an experience, not just a meal.
