St James Crabhouse & Kitchen is Brisbane’s first American-style Crabhouse, offering a mixed range of seafood dishes along with everyone's American favourites. This casual eatery is located in Kangaroo Point and street parking is usually available in the surrounding streets. These guys use locally sourced, seasonal Australian produce where possible on the menu, such as Queensland prawns & South Australian Mussels. The menu is flooded with American food options, such as marinated ribs and classic burgers. Drinks include a selection of beers such as Stone and Wood pacific Ale on tap and cider and wine to order.
The Crabhouse opened in March 2016 and owner, James, who originally went to school in America was inspired to create a US style Seafood restaurant. The decor is quite rustic, using copper piping along the roof and simple tables and chairs with paper tablecloths to create the Crabhouse experience. The restaurant staff are extremely knowledgeable with the options on their menu and happy to help.
Recommended by our waiter, the sizzling garlic prawns and twice cooked wings with a blue cheese dipping sauce were the choices for starters. These dishes did not disappoint! The prawns were cooked perfectly and were accompanied by a serve of crispy garlic bread which was a great addition to dip in the extra sauce left over. The buffalo wings had an authentic American flavour and just the right amount of spice partnered with the blue cheese dipping sauce. I will say, this blue cheese sauce is the best I have tried in Brisbane. As St James is well-known for its seafood dishes, we tried a combination of the Alaskan King Crab, Jonah Claws and South Australian Mussels in a Singapore Chilli sauce. This is traditionally served to the table on a tray in a plastic bag full of seafood covered in aromatic sauce. This dish is definitely a must try for all seafood lovers. Lastly, we tried the eight-hour sous vide, char- grilled Pork ribs, shoe string truffle fries with parmesan and crunchy baguette. The pork ribs were a favourite as they were perfectly tender and fell off the bone, also the St James barbecue sauce made these a winner!
The clear standout dishes were the Alaskan King Crab in Singapore chilli sauce and the pork spare ribs. The shoe string truffle fries with parmesan could be improved with the addition of a saltier flavour and dipping sauce.
A unique rarity in Brisbane - authentic Crabhouse with an American twist. The fresh produce and seafood makes this a must visit destination!
