Californian Eateries are hard to come by in Brisbane, and finding a good one is a whole lot tougher. That’s what we thought before checking out St Baxter.
The relatively new restaurant is a breath of fresh air compared to what you’re used to seeing along the Cafe-flooded strip of Brunswick Street. They’ve absolutely nailed the fit out with some casual, funky decor that you would expect to see on Sunset Blvd. Parking is usually a breeze, but as you would expect in New Farm, it can get a little bit more congested on your Friday and Saturday nights.
But if it takes 10 or 15 minutes to find a park, you’ll appreciate that’s well worth your time after your first bite. Co-owners Sarah and Graham have produced a menu that encompasses local and seasonal produce with their original recipes. Their aim is to serve up the traditional bold flavours of California with a ‘wink’ to the southern regions.
The Chorizo con Papas kicked off our meal nicely, and the Charred Corn with Chipotle Crema, Parmesan and Lime was a taste of things to come. The smokiness of the onion rings was pleasantly surprising, but you’ll do well to polish off a serving of these between two.
If you’re out with the family or a group of friends, the Suckling Pig, with tamarind caramel & jicama & orange salad is an ideal pick. Like San Choy Bao, it’s served in a cup of iceburg lettuce, and it comes with a thin layer of crackling which was cooked to perfection.
The traditional Dulce de Leche Icecream Sandwich with salted caramel popcorn was our personal favourite though, and we’d gladly go back just for this dessert. From the crunch to the cream, everything on the plate compliments each other perfectly - you have to experience it yourself!
Without a doubt one of the better californian eateries in Brisbane. Authentic recipes with an inspired twisst from the Southern regions.
