Launched in 2014, Nodo's philosophy of eating donuts for breakfast is something I can certainly get behind.

Their donuts are baked, not fried and made with 100% all natural, gluten free ingredients. They have since branched out and have opened a café in Newstead which focuses on breakfast made with quality GF ingredients.

The décor is bright and fresh, perfectly suited to the Newstead location with touches of copper mixed in with concrete and wood finishes. The dining section of the café seems like a bit of an afterthought though, with only a few tables avaliable along the window in an adjoining room to sit and enjoy the café menu. You may need to be prepared to wait a while to snag a seat, or take your breakfast away.

For breakfast, we chose the Breakfast Bowl which included broccoli, kale, mung beans, green chilli and quinoa. Topped with 3 perfectly poached eggs and a zingy turmeric and medjool date dressing, I was expecting the ingredients in the bowl to be served warm, but nonetheless it was still an enjoyable, healthy and filling start to the day.

We also had a Breakfast Bun which was topped with free range, ethically raised bacon, a fried free range egg, kale, cashew 'mayo' and chilli jam. The quinoa bun was nicely toasted and delicious. You can tell they use quality ingredients as it was full of flavour. For coffee, they offer a rotating selection of single origin beans, ours was from Columbia and was full bodied without any bitterness. They also produce a range of super natural shakes, including their famous ‘magic mushroom’ which includes reishi mushroom powder.

To finish, we had to try the strawberry snickers donut and the white chocolate and raspberry donut. The strawberry snickers was coated in rich milk coverture chocolate and powdered peanut butter and the white chocolate and raspberry was topped with white coverture chocolate and freeze dried raspberries. They were both absolutely delicious and were the perfect end to the meal.

Nodo is a great little spot for a weekend brunch. Family friendly with relaxed service and fantastic coffee, it is certainly worth a visit even if it is just to pick up a box of their amazing donuts to take away.

Opinion

Funky little café in Newstead. Great coffee and a fantastic gluten free menu.
