Boasting itself as the only healthy Indian restaurant in Brisbane, It’s Mirchi (named after the spice, which translates to Chilli in English) offers a wide selection of vegan, gluten free and healthy options with a focus on using certified organic produce.
They have two locations in Brisbane, one on Given Tce in Paddington and the other on Oxford Street in Bulimba.
The Paddington location was the first to open in 2014, with the recent addition of the Bulimba location opening earlier this year. The kitchens are proudly run by one of Australia’s finest Indian chefs, Urvashi with her passion for healthy cooking apparent throughout the menu.
We visited for dinner on a Sunday night and were impressed to see a few other tables occupied by diners as well as a constant string of take away orders being collected. These guys obviously have a solid following and once we started eating, it's easy to see why.
We started off our meal with the entrée of Free Range Chicken Tikka which arrived to our table sizzling on a bed of red onion and an accompanying yoghurt sauce. The chicken itself was slightly dry as they use the breast of the chicken to keep it lean, but once you added the sauce it was much more enjoyable.
For mains we chose the Coconut Beef (Mild) and the Kerala Prawn Curry (Medium.) The Coconut Beef was packed with tender slow cooked meat and shaved coconut, it was nicely spiced without any heat. The kerala prawn curry was rich and creamy from the coconut cream, with little to no heat I would recommend stepping it up to hot if you like a bit of spice – I think we were a little overly cautious. To go with our curries we ordered a gluten free garlic naan, which ended up being more of a pancake than a bread. It was quite dense and very different to a regular naan, but nonetheless was perfect for sopping up all of the curry sauce on our plates.
It’s Mirchi is a welcome change to the Indian restaurants you come to expect in Brisbane. The quality ingredients that they use reflect in the eating experience. The staff are friendly and attentive and with its dimly lit ambiance and hideaway booths where you dine on the floor, it would be perfect for a romantic date night, a large celebration or an easy takeaway option for those lazy nights on the couch.
Quality Indian fare which caters for a large number of food intolerances.
