First off, let me say this is the dive bar Brisbane really needed. Now let me also say you’re gonna be doing a whole lot of Apple mapping to find this place as it left me scratching my head for a solid 5 minutes in the middle of the dilapidated red light district on Brunswick Street. However trusting my gut, I sauntered down an alleyway and past a busy kitchen walking straight into an underground culture that I’ve never seen in Brisbane before.
We’ve seen a surge of bluesy, Rock ‘n’ Roll bars pop up around the place in the last 18 months, but I honestly don’t think they compare. Whether it’s vintage photography covering the cracks of the 130 year old heritage building or the retro fitting and fixtures, it just made me feel as if I’d stepped into another decade, or another city.
The menu here is limited, but what they do, they do well. I certainly didn’t come here with the expectation to be amazed when it came to food, because let’s face it - it’s glorified bar snacks. Having said that, extensive menus , more often than not, are crap! I wanted something especially greasy to line my stomach while I indulge in Greaser’s hugely wide-spread whiskey and cocktail menu.
The drinks menu was the highlight of this place.. I know you’re thinking, well duh! But it really is! There was so much to choose from, I needed help from the bar staff who were more than accommodating in recommending their beverages of choice.
This is such a cool place to come for casual drinks and a bite to eat. It’s also a great place to start if you’re pre-empting a big night on the town. There’s ample seating, and it's not sweltering hot despite being underground. It’s the real secretiveness about it that I believe gives it the edge over other blue’s bars in Brissy.
