I will admit, dining out is high on my list of ‘thing to do’ each week. I love getting dressed up and exploring what our beautiful city has to offer and not to mention stumbling across the many hidden gems located in the sleepy suburbs like Elios Osteria in Carina.
Elios Osteria is located on the corner of Gallipoli Road and Winstanley Street in Carina, and is truly one of those rare finds that once found, you’ll always return. Elios offers a quaint little Italy dining experience with intimate tables scattered both inside and outside the 68-year-old corner establishment.
Paul and his wife Natalie purchase Elios back in 1999 from the previous owners who were of Sicilian heritage and founded Elios back in 1984. The premises were built back in 1949 and was the planning office for the suburb Carina Heights and apparently the planning desk was located where table #3 stands today.
Paul and Natalie love to promote and maintain a suburban community feel in the restaurant and are passionate about creating unpretentious authentic Italian comfort food, the type that leaves you feeling very full in the belly.
The community feel is obvious when dining at Elios, Paul knows most of his clientele by name, the staff are always happy and helpful and unlike some Italian kitchens, you never hear a pan been thrown around the kitchen, life is good at Elios.
In fact, life is so good at Elios that some of the staff have been there for 20 years. Head chef Mark Shaw has been tantalising the tastebuds of Carina locals for the past six years and previous to Elios he has background in Caxton St Catering, Portal Hotels and Catalina Wine Bar.
Mark loves the intimacy of a small restaurant team and his passion lies in creating generous old fashioned gusto food done well. Paul adds, “I can throw anything at him and he'll make it work, and he leads our team with a flair that holds us all together when they come flooding in the door”
The owner Paul pouring my wine (it helps me write….)
I’m salivating from the sheer memory of my night at Elios, so I guess it’s time to write about the food.
For entrée I chose the Arancini balls which were absolutely delicious. I’ve had arancini balls in the past that have been dry and almost tasteless in the centre. I was pleasantly surprised to bite through the crispy outer layer and taste the distinct flavours of porcini mushrooms infused with truffle oil and melted mozzarella. The balls were served with Garlic aioli which was a sensational accompaniment in my opinion.
Arancini balls consists of five (5) generous sized portions for $14 and makes a great vegetarian option.
For main I chose the Confit duck which is imported from France. For those of you that have never heard of ‘Confit duck’ it is considered as one of the finest dishes in France. Confit is a process that is centuries-old and simply means the preservation of a piece of meat usually duck, pork or goose using a salt curing process then cooking the meat in its own fat. The confit duck served at Elios Osteria is a leg of duck that is twice baked in its own fat served on a bed of fettuccini and mushrooms infused with cream, butter, herbs and garnished with a generous lashing of sweet orange marmalade. And the best thing is it is completely free of calories……. Just joking.
This sensational dish is a very generous size and is priced at $30
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better the Panna cotta had me at hello. Perched on a bed of toffee crumbs, and accompanied by a scoop of Banana gelato the Vanilla and Frangelico panna cotta was literally like tasting heaven. The presentation was pretty and the dessert was sweet but not sickly and was the perfect ending to my Elios experience.

Tuesday night is Magic night where each table enjoys a one on one magic trick with magician Simon Paxton. I will warn you though, hold onto your watch because he’ll have it off your arm before you even know it. I think he’s an alien, you can decide for yourself, he is a great magician.
