Dovetail On Overend is literally a (bird) hole-in-the-wall. Placed on the corner of Overend and Dickens St in Norman Park, the suburban cafe welcomes visitors with an open fit out on the patio of a little, cladded house. The cafe is modest and welcoming, with a humble team of passionate staff under the management of creators Adam and Rejoice Thomson.
The cafe boasts great service and home-style, all-day breakfast, making for the perfect lazy Sunday morning spot as your home away from home.
It gets better! Not only is the coffee delicious but Dovetail was named one of Australia's best cafes by Bean Hunter. Their lattes are rich and creamy, while their espresso boasts in beautiful complex flavours depending on the featured roastery.
Recently (so recent it isn't even on the menu yet!) they started serving a coconut based drink similar to a chai latte. It's called 'CocoVelle Originale', hand-blended by Tassie-born Garth Midgley (the guy who won Channel 10’s reality show 'Recipe to Riches' in 2013 with his other food innovation 'Chocorn'). Dovetail are one of three Brisbane cafes to be stocking the creation. It's smooth, sweet and goes great with soy milk - and yes, it is vegan friendly!
If you're feeling a little peckish, Dovetail have created a great all-day breakfast menu. It's loaded with bacon, eggs, and all that you'd want after a Saturday night. The Baked Eggs #7 comes served on a little wooden board with two free range eggs, house beef chili con carne & persian fetta served with toasted sourdough. They nail the amount of chilli in this dish and the eggs are baked to perfection.
The Dovetail Supreme (signature breakfast) and The Tasting Plate are not the most "gram-able" dishes but do not be deceived. These two menu favourites are your classic big brekkies with a more simple approach. The plate simply lays out all the delicious ingredients and it all speaks for itself - 100% deliciousness. On The Tasting Plate is an epic vegetarian big breakfast with both caponata siciliana and avo served on toasted sourdough, thick cut halloumi, and two eggs sunny side up. Halloumi is the best part!
Saving the best till last is the amazing dessert hand-made by one of the owners, Rejoice. Every Sunday Rejoice serves up a batch of fresh, sticky cinnamon scrolls with sticky caramel and pecan. They usual sell out by 10:30 am so it's important to get there early for these magical scrolls.
Along with the scrolls, Rejoice bakes some of the most delicious doughnuts you will ever try. If you weren't told, you wouldn't even be able to guess they were gluten and dairy free! A few of the doughnuts on weekly rotation are the dark chovocha glaze doughnut with raspberry, and toasted coconut, and the maple doughnut with vanilla, rose water, and freeze dried strawberries.
Dovetail is the perfect Sunday morning location, especially for their sweet treats. Make sure you get there early though as they sell out quick.
