New Winter Flavours - District 1.

Looking for some hearty comfort food this winter? District 1. will have you sorted with their new winter menu featuring a modern twist on traditional Vietnamese cuisine using locally sourced produce.

Think you have heard of District1 before? Well, you may have as the owners also own a stall called District1 at Eat Street Markets at Hamilton. District1 has been open since April 2015 and is centrally located in Fortitude Valley next to Chinatown. The restaurant menu consists of well known Vietnamese street food such as Bahn Mi, Rice Paper Rolls and pho favourites.

On our visit to District1 we were greeted by the Chef/owner who was very welcoming and was quick to recommend some restaurant favourites. We were treated to a dish called XUI MAI which is a traditional pork and water chestnut meatball in a tomato sauce served with baguettes and homemade Vietnamese butter. This was a perfect combination of flavours and even this entree on its own could be a full meal as it was quite filling.

We also decided to try the Crispy Squid, Green Papaya Salad which was a vibrant, fresh salad full of herbs and packed with flavour.

The Chefs final recommendation was an aromatic Spicy beef Noodle Soup - The newest menu item! We were delighted with the quality and combination of Vietnamese flavours in the dishes. Just beware with the level of spice in the Spicy Noodle soup, this really packs a punch!

For beverages there is a few options from Vietnamese coffee to fresh whole coconuts, keeping in with the style of the restaurant. We chose to try the Vietnamese coffee and the frozen coconut slushie blended with lychee and mint. The mint/lychee frappe was a favourite and was delicious with the spicy Vietnamese menu items - Definitely a must try!

The location is perfect for locals and public transport however may be challenging for those who wish to park in the area as there is usually only paid parking available. When visiting the restaurant it is clear that it is a popular takeaway spot, as they use a variety of companies to deliver food locally (Deliveroo, Menulog). For this reason it does feel at times to be more of a takeaway atmosphere rather than a restaurant.

The decor incorporates wood and natural authentic pieces to decorate the restaurant. The cosy feel makes it great for a mid week, inner city meal with a small group of friends.

Great local restaurant that dishing up delicious Vietnamese street food with a serve of friendly service on the side.
