Operated by Phillip Pham, District.1 serves up an assortment of traditional Vietnamese dishes. Whether you’re in the mood for salads, vermicelli noodles, banh mi or pho, District.1 has got you covered.  This newly added, shiny little gem brings a new sense to Vietnamese Street food to the Chinatown mall.

The food here is simply what makes this place shine. I went for the Seafood Pineapple fried rice, which was so full of flavour. Serving it inside a grilled pineapple meant that the rice soaked up all of that juice, making it tastier as you got to the bottom. For what it costs, Phillip certainly doesn’t scrimp on the ingredients! This thing was stacked with flavour from the tiger prawns, to squid and char siu. Also had was the roast peking duck rice paper rolls w/hoisin sauce, which were remarkable. And as for the hoisin sauce, I pretty much felt like liking the bowl dry it was that flavoursome!

The fit out is simple! Nothing fancy but certainly gives off a cool urban, busy street feel. The décor is new, clean and keeps to the standard in which you would expect. With counter service there is a very casual vibe going on here, which is what we found to enjoy the most. This place does not take itself too seriously, with friendly staff, and a welcoming atmosphere. I was a little disappointed that the food didn’t come out at the same time, but given the ample ingredients that were served in my dish, this made up for it outstandingly!

District.1 is situated along Ann Street in the Fortitude Valley, just at the entrance to Chinatown. It’s a great location as it isn’t buried within the mall and is fairly easy to find. Street parking as per usual, with peak times proving to be tricky. If a short walk isn’t an issue to you, my go to place is east on Brunswick Street toward New Farm and the first left after the Flying Cock.

Our Opinion

Great little restaurant when you’re after something authentic that will surely satisfy. I love the idea of Vietnamese street food, fused with traditional dishes. It makes for a cool eatery, and with its late night trading hours it means you can ditch the fast food and get a hearty solid meal, for let’s face it; the same price!
