Recently we were invited to test the new winter menu at Alegria Mediterranean Bistro in Milton. It's a small restaurant; but the soft lighting and bare bricks walls makes it feel very cozy and intimate. This is exactly the sort of place you want to be on a cold winter’s night.
The first thought on entering the bistro is “what is that amazing smell?” - throughout the night delicious smells wafted out of the kitchen, making the anticipation for food even greater. The food was incredible; inventive without being too unusual. We started slow with charcuterie and fresh bread. Things sped up a little after that as we sampled several options from the tapas menu; goats curd and quince brik cigars, white anchovies with smoked tomato sorbet, crisp fried school prawns with saffron aoili and my personal favourite; green pea and truffle arancini. Lastly we sampled several options from the ranciones (larger share plates). They were all incredible but to my surprise my favourite was the grilled ox tongue; it was tender and delicious and was perfectly paired with pesto gnocchi and fresh ricotta.
Zsolt and Lazlo were both fantastic hosts; friendly, knowledgeable and up for a laugh, they really made us feel welcome. Alegria Mediterranean Bistro has a very European attitude to service; food is meant to be enjoyed, not rushed, and so don’t expect your main to come out seconds after your entree. It's a place to settle in, enjoy your wine and time with people you love.
Invite all your friends, crack open a few bottles of red wine and order everything to share.
